Tragedy on IRC Targa Florio Rally

Gareth Roberts, co-driver to FIA WRC Academy champion Craig Breen, lost his life in a tragic accident today, when crew’s Peugeot 207 S2000 crashed into a guard rail on stage eight.

Despite the best efforts of the doctors and emergency teams, Gareth Roberts lost this battle due to unknown but obviously severe injuries sustained in a crash. I will not pass the photo of a crashed 207, but it does show extensive damage to the front of the car and accident happened at very high speed.

Gareth Roberts’ rally career started in 2004 and he climbed up the ladder of local and national rallies and championships – a very rich and successful career for a 24 year old. His efforts were crowned last year when he won inaugural FIA World Rally Academy alongside Craig Breen with victories in Germany and Great Britain.

Thoughts and condolences go out to Gareth’s family and friends, his driver and team.
