Video: Why stop lines are usually so far away from the finish line

This is one scary video, even more so because it shows a very close call by several drivers and it all happened outside of the timed special stages. If you’ve ever walked around special stages you probably noticed that stop lines are usually quite far away from the finish line, in order to give drivers enough time to safely slow down and roll into a stop to deal with the time control procedure.

One special stage in Monte Carlo did not quite offer enough room for slowing down, at least with road being wet and slippery. In order not to end up slamming into another car standing at the stop control, Sebastien Ogier and Mads Ostberg had to spin out and intentionally drive off the road and into a field. Tricky situation and it could have been very expensive, let alone dangerous.

Stay safe, guys!
